Start 9:16
Avoid designing a landscape asset first and simply cropping it later.
TikTok’s own creative guidance continues to prioritise vertical 9:16 video. For a clean production master, 1080 × 1920 is the practical target, with at least 720p quality and key messaging kept inside the UI-safe area.
Build for the full-screen experience first. Other ratios may be accepted in some workflows, but 9:16 is the native design direction.
| Format | Dimensions | Ratio | Design note |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recommended production master | 1080 × 1920 px | 9:16 | Full-screen vertical creative. |
| Quality floor | At least 720p | 9:16 | TikTok creative guidance recommends 720p or better. |
| In-feed ad minimum | 540 × 960 px | 9:16 | Current TikTok Ads guidance lists this as the minimum vertical dimension for non-Spark in-feed ads. |
| Alternative ad formats | 960 × 540 / 640 × 640 min | 16:9 / 1:1 | Supported in some ad workflows, but not the preferred native vertical experience. |
Avoid designing a landscape asset first and simply cropping it later.
Keep the core message away from the right-side actions and lower caption/navigation areas.
Profile, caption, buttons and navigation all change the visual balance of the video frame.
TikTok’s current business guidance explicitly recommends 9:16 vertical creative and at least 720p resolution. The platform also tells advertisers to keep important information within the UI safe zone.
For designers, that means the full-screen dimensions are only step one. The approval mockup should show the interface as well, so the team can see whether key type, faces or CTAs collide with the platform controls.
Upload the video or artwork, add the profile and caption details, then review the creative inside a TikTok-style full-screen mockup.

Not in every workflow. TikTok’s current guidance recommends 9:16 and at least 720p; 1080 × 1920 is a strong production target rather than a universal minimum.
The exact occupied UI varies by caption and format. Keep key information away from the right-side controls and lower caption/navigation area, then preview the finished composition in context.
